We have agreed to share Appendix C, an Analysis of Debbie Miller's Interaction with the Class and Brendan. We will blank out the analysis side of the columns and the class will decide what Debbie's comments show her students.
If you have ideas or comments to this activity please post here!
What do we feel is the necessary background information our classmates need for them to get what we envision out of this activity?
ReplyDeleteIn regards to Sarah's question: This activity is focusing on the language that teachers use in unplanned interactions with their students. In order to remain genuine, the interaction has to be spontaneous; therefore, it is going to reflect on the teacher's views regarding, who he/she is, who the student is, and what the students think they are doing.(If it is planned, the student will see it as not genuine) In the dialogue that we will use between Debbie and the student, Debbie's views influence her language use-it is automatic for her to ask certain questions and make certain statements because of the combination of how she views herself and the students, and what she wants them to take away from the lesson. (When we do our activity, we (Chelsea and I)could give an introduction into what Debbie wants from her learners, and as our groups do the exercise they will be analyzing what she is trying to convey to the students through the "authentic/unplanned" language that she is using. Does that make sense?? Thoughts Chelsea?
ReplyDeleteJeanne, I agree we are focusing on unplanned interactions and looking at classroom language. I agree that we should give an introduction about what Debbie expects from her learners.
ReplyDeleteOutline of Activity
Teachers have different ways of thinking about who they and who their students are
The way teachers view their students influences the language teachers use in the classroom
Debbie Miller is a well written author about literacy instruction for elementary students
She focuses on student learning and aims to engage students in thinking about the process of learning and expressing themselves
We are going to give you time to read an authentic script of a conversation Debbie had with a student
We want you to reflect on what message Debbie is conveying to her students
Do you have anything you want to add or change to this rough outline of what we will say during the introduction of this activity?
Hi Chelsea,
ReplyDeleteSahll we divide it so that one of us can give a short intro, and one of us can then explain to the class how it relates to our activity and what they are to do? (Dividing the outline you've written)
Then both of us could follow up with class discussion about the different ideas they came up with. How does that sound? Or do you have other ideas? Gracias!
That sounds great Jeanne! Maybe I'll do the first half and you can do the second half then we can just play on the class discussion as it comes? I will email you a little divided outline and then you can add to it or okay it!
